SAN ANTONIO, TX – Sept. 18, 2013 – There’s no other gig like this one. As 30,000 runners pass by, local bands will become musical inspiration, pushing participants of the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Marathon & ½ Marathon toward the finish line. The race is currently accepting applications from bands who want to be part of the rocking, running block party on Sunday, November 17.
Bands will be staged every mile of the course, which includes a Mini Marathon, Relay and Bike Tour in addition to the 13.1 mile half marathon and 26.2 mile marathon. Together with local high school cheerleading teams and themed water stations, the band performances create an unforgettable and truly entertaining journey for every participant.
“Music is what makes a Rock ‘n’ Roll race unique. We choose local bands to reflect the flavor of the city our runners are experiencing,” said Alan Culpepper, vice president at Competitor Group. “We’re looking for all types of styles, from rock ‘n’ roll to reggae and everything in between. Most importantly, we’re looking for music that’s high energy and motivating to keep our runners going.”
In its 6th year, the race is debuting a brand new course that will take runners from all 50 states and 10 foreign countries through parts of the city that have never been included before. The race will start at a new location on Cherry Street at Commerce Street and travel through downtown and past the Alamo before exploring the newly developed Pearl complex and experiencing new sights like the Brackenridge Park, Japanese Tea Garden, San Antonio Zoo and through the Trinity University campus. Marathoners will continue down Mission Parkway and along the Mission Trail which follows the famous Riverwalk for four miles. All runners will finish outside the Alamodome where they’ll celebrate with a post-race concert featuring country star Joe Nichols.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll San Antonio Bike Tour will take participants along 23 miles of the full marathon course. Participants also have the opportunity to partake in a 2-Person Half Marathon Relay, which allows teams to split the distance into 6 mile and 7.1 mile legs.
Race weekend begins with a two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the Alamodome, where all participants go to pick up their race number and explore more than 100 running and fitness retailers, exhibits and clinics.
